James T.R. Jones was an American law professor who taught at the University of Louisville’s Louis D. Brandeis School of Law from 1986 until his death in 2018. He was known for his teaching and legal scholarship and later became a mental-health advocate. [2]

Career and work

Jones earned his J.D. with honors from Duke University School of Law, where he served on the Duke Law Journal and was elected to the Order of the Coif. After law school, he clerked for judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, then worked in private practice in New York and Florida. He was also a member of the Florida Bar. [2]

He entered academia in 1985 as a Bigelow Teaching Fellow and Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School. In 1986, he joined the University of Louisville’s Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, where he remained on the faculty for the rest of his career. [2]

His teaching and scholarship covered torts, domestic violence, professional liability, decedents’ estates, legal writing and written advocacy. He became particularly known for scholarship examining how tort law could be used to improve institutional responses to domestic violence. [3][2]
