Marya Hornbacher is an American journalist, essayist, novelist and poet whose books include the bestselling memoirs Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia and Madness: A Bipolar Life. Her work has also appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Vogue, Smithsonian Magazine and Guernica. [2]
Career and work
Hornbacher first became widely known with her 1998 memoir Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia, written in her early twenties. The book became a bestseller, was translated into 16 languages and sold more than one million copies in the United States. [3]
She later published the novel The Center of Winter and the memoir Madness: A Bipolar Life, followed by Sane: Mental Illness, Addiction, and the Twelve Steps and Waiting: A Nonbeliever’s Higher Power. Hornbacher has also worked extensively as a journalist and essayist. [2]
