Townes Van Zandt was an influential American singer-songwriter whose work became a major influence on country and folk music. His best-known songs include “Pancho and Lefty” and “If I Needed You,” both of which became major country hits when recorded by other artists. [2]
Career and work
Van Zandt began performing in Houston in the mid-1960s and moved into recording after songwriter Mickey Newbury introduced him to Nashville. Between the late 1960s and 1970s, he released a series of albums that became cult favorites, including For the Sake of the Song, Townes Van Zandt, Delta Momma Blues, and High, Low and in Between. [2][1]
Although he never achieved major commercial success as a recording artist, his songwriting became highly influential. “If I Needed You” became a hit for Emmylou Harris and Don Williams, while Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard had a major hit with “Pancho and Lefty.” Van Zandt was inducted into the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016. [2]
